Bio:
I am an artist that focuses on representing people. When I was a kid, I made tons of drawings of stick figures in action sequences, with strong personalities and motion with simple figures. Later on in Highschool I began learning figure drawing, capturing the motion and personality of a figure. Personhood has played an important role in all of my work. Each work has its own personality, with some focusing on the wonder that can be found in our daily lives, or representing the feelings that we all share. Recently I've returned my focus to representation of the human figure, where personality and identity can be shown through posture and motion.
Artist statement
My art is split between abstract works tied to feelings and locations, and representational work tied to people and places I care about. The world we each live in is a mixture of the physical world defined by cause and effect, and our own personal experience, which colors the way we view the world. I find it important to represent both. My figure drawing pieces such as 21 portraits are focused on representing the physical attributes of the people I know, but my own knowledge and experiences with them always changes the final product, almost always for the better, as it adds soul and identity to the work in ways that perfect representation cannot. My more abstract work is often focused inward, analyzing my own emotions and experiences. My candle series focuses on the feeling of hope, and its progression over the course of my life. In that series, I recalled my years in Texas' public education system as well as the current political and economic climate, and how as a queer person the government and society within Texas as well as the United States as a whole has attacked queer people to create hate as a means of political control instead of addressing the country’s failing infrastructure and loss of trust internationally. The most recent pieces are focused on my increased hope for the future after finding community here in Denton.
